An OVERVIEW of the TOXIC MOLD PROBLEM
(TOXIC MOLD …… THE NEXT ASBESTOS?)

Dear EEA Friend:

Welcome to our summer issue!  If we had to name one environmental problem that has been in the news lately, we would have to say mold.  Molds are fungi that exist in our natural environment.   They can be found both indoors and  outdoors throughout the year.   There are over 1,000 species of mold in the U.S. and about 100,000 known species worldwide.  They can cause structural damage, allergic reactions, illness and odor problems, but we must remember that they are also essential to our environment by providing medicine (penicillin family of drugs), food (cheeses) and breakdown of organic matter.  So, how do we manage mold when it is uninvited into our homes, workplaces and other structures?  Read more about mold by using our link below.

OTHER EEA  NEWS…..

The Hazardous Materials Division reports that the NYSDEC and NYS Department of Health have been fine tuning and implementing new Vapor Intrusion Guidelines.  The public comment period for the guidelines ended in May of this year.  Vapor intrusion is the migration of volatile hazardous chemicals from the subsurface into buildings and other structures.  EEA is currently implementing these guidelines on applicable projects.  Contact Nick Recchia at nrecchia@eeaconsultants.com for up-to-date compliance for your HazMat sites.

EEA would like to officially welcome Mr. Hardik Parekh to the firm.  Mr. Parekh is an environmental engineer in our Hazardous Materials and Remediation Division.  He comes to EEA with engineering experience from abroad (India) and locally within the tristate area.  He can be reached at the Garden City office or email at hparekh@eeaconsultants.com.

The Ecology Division is currently overseeing the planting phase of the 3.1-acre tidal wetlands creation project at the Fresh Kills Landfill for the NYC Department of Sanitation.  Completion will be in the late fall/winter 2005/2006.

The ecology group is currently finishing the ecological studies and Article 7 permitting (Public Service Commission) for the Keyspan Cross Bay Cable Project.  This cable will connect to the proposed LIPA offshore wind farm.  See EEA’s Spring 2003 Newsletter, “Winds of Change Blow Across Long Island” for more information on the wind farm.

EEA is knee deep in watersheds! Two projects have progressed to review stage:   the North Shore Embayments Watershed Management Plan for the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, which encompasses all north shore waterfront from Huntington east to Southold, and the Scudder’s Pond Subwatershed Plan, for the Hempstead Harbor Protection Committee.

EEA’s wetlands team is also very excited about their recent work with H. M. White Site Architects.  A wetlands creation plan is now in place for the new wildlife conservation facility at the Bronx Zoo.  Contact Laura Schwanof at our Stony Brook Office or lschwanof@eeaconsultants.com for more information.
