Intake System: An Innovative Water Intake System For Power Generation
Facilities
Dear EEA Friend:
This Spring's issue
introduces an exciting new patent pending concept developed by some of
EEA's senior staff. An innovative and low impact intake structure
design will provide cooling water for power generating and manufacturing
facilities. Make sure to also link to our Winter Issue on Cooling Water
Intake Structures (CWIS) to learn the basics of the current designs and
regulations.

>>>EEA Makes Strides on Brownsfields
In 2003, EEA submitted
a brownsfield application to NYSDEC for development of a property in
Queens, NY. This application has now been accepted and certified
complete. EEA's application was one of the first of four applications
to be accepted in the region.

Regulatory Update
The USEPA regulations
were just finalized in February of this year for existing (Phase II)
power plants that withdraw more than 50 million gallons of water per day
(CWA §316(b)). They stipulate
performance standards for reducing entrainment and impingement of fish
and shellfish, and the “Comprehensive Demonstration Study Requirements”
(CDSR) necessary to support a utility’s permit to operate. Surely both
the regulators, and the regulated, will have their hands full as each
seeks to chart its respective course of action over the next few years.
The 400 page text of the rule is available at:
